She stood between heaven and earth,
evergreen against the seasons
daughter, sister and aunt
and custodian of the stars
The celebrated brother, William
the prodigal nephew, John
but astronomy is not a passion
for those seeking fame
Hands calloused by the seasons,
eyes, cataract by the years
but every night, her gaze upwards
waiting for her children to appear
Under the blanket of darkness,
amidst the weather and cold,
one woman peering up at the firmament
the first woman to be so bold
And in the heavens she found
and in dying light she saw
stars and nebulae abound
united by some cosmic law
And though her light has dimmed
her memory grows brighter still
as bright as any comet, and
a testament to incredible will
